#2 PG, #8 Overall, *****; no promises. Matthew Etheride is a very good PG already. He will become quite a bit better. The only problem I can see with him is that he's a bad rebounder, which will probably keep him as a PG throughout his career, and possibly give up an edge to opponents. The NBA is probably waiting for Etheridge after he tops out, which will be around his Junior season.

#52 SG, unranked Overall, **; redshirting. Here, on the other hand, we have a surefire 5 year player. Couey will be a backup PG throughout his time here. It's possible, if he tops out high enough, that he could start as a senior.

Personally, I would've gone for a different redshirt candidate, Michael Gill, who was signed by Bradley. He was an SG/SF, but I like Couey just fine (I saw him as a backup option). However, with this team I'm more of an assistant coach - I get to give my opinion or handle some day-to-day things, but the final call comes to my successor.

I wasn't able to post this yesterday, as I was at a different computer, but the preseason #4 Michigan State Spartans, close to the beginning of Season 43:

Exhibition #2: a solid shellacking of a team with a decent coach...Both our offense and defense were great here.

From:John Wilson
To:Coach colorblind79
Subject:Player Thoughts...
Sent:03/31/2010 3:09AM

Hey coach, you asked me to give you my thoughts on how everyone looked after the offseason and I think I've seen enough to do that. I only jotted down things that stood out to me...

James buchanan:
athleticism: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[that leaves perimeter, stamina, passing, and ball handling.]

Travis Campbell:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[he's topped out, but he won't go pro early, I don't think, because I doubt he's a pro.]

Michael Carey:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
[I guess he can improve FT shooting.]

Matthew Couey:
athleticism: big upside
ball handling: big upside
defensive fundamentals: big upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: big upside
rebounding: limited upside
speed: big upside
stamina: big upside

Matthew Etheridge:
athleticism: big upside
durability: big upside
perimeter shooting: big upside
stamina: big upside

Howard Henry:
passing: big upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[still lots of room to grow with a junior...interesting]

Eugene Hoffman:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
durability: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[speed, stamina, rebounding, and defense are still available to improve.]

William Jameson:
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[speed, athleticism, stamina, low post, and maybe some secondary skills are on the menu this year.]

Mark McCausland:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[topped out, but a senior.]

Reginald Olson:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: limited upside
[rebounding and perimeter, but he's no better than a backup guard.]

Calvin Richardson:
ball handling: big upside
passing: big upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[interesting...he could actually make a decent SF with practice.]

John Wilkey:
durability: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: limited upside
[nice...the only area of "complaint" is that he could have high potential in shot blocking and doesn't.]

Anyway, maybe some guidelines for practice time? If I notice anything else, I'll let you know.

- John

We were outrebounded...interesting. Anyways, a win away from home against a team that traditionally wins considerably more than it loses. The perfect type of non-con win.
