Hey Coach, you're just 2 wins away from a National Championship! Did you see the headlines in the Post? 'MICHIGAN ST. REACHES FINAL 4'

For the first time I remember seeing, all four #1 seeds make the Final Four.  We will be playing #1 Alabama, the most talented team I have ever seen in HD (who we happened to beat on their home court during out of conference play, so we've got a pretty decent shot, but the best we can hope for is a coin flip):

Back and forth for most of the game, tied with 8:59 to go, down 1 point with 7:25 to go, by 3 with 5:36 to go, and then Alabama starting putting some distance between the teams.  Hell of a game, but it stops the Spartans from reaching the Championship, yet again.

Coach, even with that Final 4 loss, it was still a heck of a season, one that everyone on campus is proud of! I just hope you're around next season to take us even further.

#37 PG, #160 Overall, ***; ineligible. On the other extreme, Tony Olivo will be sitting out this year completely, but looks like the sort of guy who will improve into a starting quality PG by the time he has been on campus for his 5 year tour.
Olivo did improve into a starting quality PG, though probably not a pro.  He started for two years for the Spartans (each year ending at the Final Four) and played significant time on two other teams (each a Sweet Sixteen).  Solid and efficient but not a star.  His perimeter rating improved more than I thought it would, and ballhandling stretched the limit, as well.  Really a good player and a good signing.

#59 PF, #227 Overall, ***; no promises. In a normal year, Tim Wood would be redshirting. Perhaps he still will, but the team needs depth at SF, even presuming that we win a recruiting battle with Wisconsin for a starting level SF, and he could provide depth either there (though with his ballhandling and passing ratings, he would not be a good fit) or at a big man spot and have another guy shift over to SF at times. He's not much to look at right now but should improve fairly well, especially if the redshirt is applied and accepted.
Tim Woods did redshirt, and played well and efficiently in a supporting role throughout his career at Maryland.  He started as a senior, played efficiently on offense and did good work on defense with blocks and rebounds.  I highly doubt that he'll be playing in the NBA, but he's been a good player for us.

#1 PG, #21 Overall, *****; promised 10 minutes.  The sole signee of this class - Kentucky took away a PF/SF - Silvestri is a nice player with a high ceiling.  He's likely to be a pro, which is why MSU had to beat back Tennessee for his services.  No apparent long-term weaknesess.  Rebounding will be a strength, which is great for a PG.
Ralph Silvestri is a very good PG/SG with a well-rounded game, who could have been more of a star if it had been necessary, but was able to share the scoring load with other players on the team.  I do think he'll be drafted.  One of the best guards I've had.

From what I can tell (colorblind, remember) there's a lot of green in there that isn't showing in this post, unfortunately.  Golden wasn't scouted but he's the #2 player in the country, overall.  Kaczor is #3 overall; both are top in their position.  Nobody has high potential in athleticism or speed; Redick's topped out in athleticism, as is Brodie, and neither Brodie nor Kaczor will gain much speed.  Kaczor won't improve much in rebounding, low post, passing, ballhandling, or stamina, either, but he should see some improvement elsewhere, particularly in perimeter and blocking.  Redick's stamina will improve. Voelker has a few areas of improvement.  These guys have ugly names.  Whatever, they're all young, they'll all be fine, some better than others, some will go pro, others probably won't.

We had a couple of early entries this year, Jeffery Golden and Raymond Brodie.  Obviously I was feeling lazy when they were signed, so we don't have individual profiles for each of them (r three other players who will be seniors next year).  Golden was a legitimate star who was close to topping out and was right to go pro.  Brodie was a reserve who would have seen more time in Golden's absence.  Our frontcourt is now quite sparse, with only two players, though obviously there will be a signing or two, and maybe Ronnie Voelker can contribute from the PF slot, as well as backing up Kaczor.

(In the real world, I highly doubt that Brodie would be drafted, here, but obviously he'll be at least sneaking in to the 2nd round.  He really should have come back as a senior.)

Analysis:

The team has 6 openings, and three seniors.  The team needs at least one guard and one big man.  Ideally it would get two of each, and a promising SF.  JuCo Juniors would be helpful (and probably cheap)...as many as three.  If three big men are recruited, at least one would have to fit in a different class than true freshman, to avoid a massive drain of talent down the road, in successive years.  Redick can start for a year but he's far from the best overall guard, or even shooter, that I've seen...he really is ideally a reserve, but someone has to take the job from him; his defense is also semi-limited by his 83 speed.  Wagner's a quality starter for as long as he stays at MSU.  Brothers has a rebounding problem to the point that Voelker would arguably be a better starting PF than him, this year.  Whitesides is a bit slow but overall he can probably handle the load.  Kaczor is one of the stars of the team and I'm not sure he can truly thrive as the teams' focus, offensively.

#11 SF, #58 Overall, ****; no promises.  Barry Thomas is exactly the promising, developmental SF who is needed to either sit for a year, or to back up the SF spot while Voelker shifts over to starting PF, depending on the remaining recruiting battles.  In evaluations he looks to have very high potential in ball handling, low post, and rebounding.  He'll be a bit slow, and his stamina will never allow him to play significantly more than 20 minutes per game, but he looks like a good enough player to likely start next year, and stay in the starting lineup throughout his remaining time before going to the NBA.

#16 C, #107 Overall, ***; JuCo Jr., no promises.  Richard Stevens is a short-term stopgap.  I did not scout Minnesota so I don't know what his potential is.  He's a good player for our immediate needs.  He will provide much-needed depth for the frontcourt.  Not a likely pro.

Oops, didn't post this guy when I had the information on his ranking and potential.  The one big note is that he has average, not high, potential in rebounding, which will limit him.  I think in his other relevant areas, he's got high potential.  Obviously he's a pretty good player in general, and will almost definitely play in the NBA.

We got beaten by Kentucky for a SG, and by Florida for a foreign PG.  We barely beat Michigan for Watson.  This may be a messy year.
