Hmm, doesn't seem to show potential.  Well, they're all good players with nice potential.

[edit, 12/16/10:]

This recruiting class was ranked the 6th best in DI.

Alabama was number 1, and has an average rating, one game in to the regular season, of 821!  Crazy!

Also of note: Silvestri was named a First Team Preseason All American, and Kaczor was named to the Second Team.
Whitesides was the only one of the three who made it to their senior season.  Wagner left as a sophomore and Brothers as a junior.  Well, I think Whitesides is another professional, but we'll see soon where (or if) he's drafted.  He was our second best player this year, and a key contributor last year with almost the same statistical output.  I don't know how much size actually matters in HD, but he was a proper 7 foot center, and played like one.

#6 SG, #33 Overall, *****; no promises.  Juhl will probably start at some point this year, though I'm not sure if he's quite ready for the role.  He'd make a nice SF as well as a solid SG...maybe better to begin with as an SF and growing into an SG as he develops more speed and passing ability.  Regardless, he's ready to see the floor immediately in some fashion.
I didn't think it would be likely that Juhl would leave after this year, but I did consider it as a possibility.  Happily, Freund stayed, we have competent SFs ready to step in, and Kincannon has developed enough to be a starting guard, so this doesn't hurt us horribly (depending on recruiting for future starters/depth).  Regardless, Juhl was a good player for us...but really just a part of a great team, rather than being great himself.  He was more of a supporting castmate than a star, though his support was excellent, both in defense and offense.  He was more efficient as a SG, during his freshman year, than as an SF as a sophomore.  I don't know that he would have made a great SG, which is where he likely would have been playing next season had he stayed, but if you look at the production from George Carter, who had lesser abilities in general, I think that points to Juhl having a good chance to do more in that slot.  As it stands, though, he's leaving us, even though he still had room to grow in college.  I don't know quite where he'll be drafted.  I hope in the first round - it might even be high in the first round.  I'm glad we signed him.

#20 SG, #97 Overall, ***, JuCo Jr; no promises.  Carter is a perfect 2-year backup utility guard.  He'll probably backup the point position because immediately he's the best ballhandler and passer on the team (but doesn't have the potential to get much better).  I highly doubt he'll be drafted, but he should be a very valuable contributor to our team.
George Carter didn't grow too much in terms of his abilities, but he contributed heavily to two Championship runs (whether or not the second one was quite realized).  As a junior, he backed up the PG spot and provided quality, efficient minutes.  As a senior, he started at SG and was an effective second guard and fourth or fifth scoring option.  Really, an ideal teammate - Carter did exactly what the team needed in two highly successful seasons, to the best of his abilities.

#124 SG, unranked overall, no stars, JuCo Jr;  no promises.  Jack Nutter is sort of a space filler, but he could see significant time as a junior (and he'll probably be supplanted by Kincannon as a senior).  Nutter is a prototypical spot-up jump shooter whose comes off the bench for a quick spark.  He's got some upside on defense but that's limited by his mediocre speed and athleticism.  His low ballhandling will mean that he has to have shots created for him, but he should be able to make most of the shots he gets off of passes.  He's very disposable, regardless, and could easily be the 12th man on the team.  Also, with that 2.0 GPA, there's no telling how much study hall he needs.
Jack Nutter did everything we could ask from him.  As a junior, he started for 15 games as James Juhl got up to speed on the Motion offense, then Nutter sat on the bench and came in as that spark 3-point shooter that we needed.  His effectiveness in his role, as a senior, was outstanding.  Nutter also grew a fair amount as a player during his time with us.  Nutter is not an NBA guy, but he helped us to two 32 win years, a championship, and another championship game.  That's pretty damn good for a scrubby JuCo from Minnesota.  Also, we managed to raise his grades almost to B level.

#3 PF, #8 Overall, *****; no promises.  Nicholas Rosen wasn't one of our original targets - I'll post the guy he replaced in the overall assessment.  In reality, he's probably a better player than the person who he replaced, Perry Gaylor, now of Kentucky.  The one big area of weakness for Rosen is his FT shooting.  Otherwise, he's a fanstasic talent, and certain to make the NBA, possibly leaving early to do so.  Our one big battle of this recruiting season was over Rosen - we beat Illinois, a team that had 3 openings and 2 other battles when we decided to shift our attention to this guy.  Due to his work ethic, he'll need early playing time, but that shouldn't be a problem (at the expense of Vosburgh, this year).  I think he'll be behind Sheehan for the year but might take the starting role next season.  Heck, he may start this season, due to the work ethic issue alone.
One year as a reserve does not make a proper collegiate career.  I can only think of one player, Marvin Williams of UNC, who, in the real world, was able to go from freshman reserve straight to the lottery of the NBA Draft.  I think this year, we'll probably see Enes Kantor of Kentucky do the same, except he wasn't actually a reserve, he was just hurt all year.

Nicholas Rosen.  That was too soon for this guy to leave.  For the record, Brandon Payeur is still at LSU and Perry Gaylor is still at Kentucky.  Yes, he is far more replaceable, at least at this point in his career, than Roy Freund, and if I had to choose to lose one it would be Rosen, but he really didn't do much for the team.  He was a good reserve, for a year.  Not amazing, not enough for me to grow attached to him in any way.  He was just a good young player who would've been a good older player, who had room to grow, and who I did not expect to declare for the draft this soon.

#2 PG, #6 Overall, *****; no promises.  James Moore is obviously a great player with a high ceiling in the areas in which he's currently weak, and limited growth potential in areas in which he's already strong.  He will be a great asset to the Spartans.

#11 SF, #30 Overall, *****; no promises.  Benny Feldman is a role player, but a good one.  Sort of a typical garbageman SF, starting quality player who won't be the focus of an offense but will do everything reasonably well and make the team better as a whole.  It's hard to find SFs without any weaknesses...though he could be faster, he's fast enough, though he could be better at scoring close to the basket, he's good enough, though he could have more stamina, it's good enough for about 20 minutes per game, etc.  The areas where he doesn't look so good now, he should develop into being good enough before long.  So yeah, not a star, but a worthy contributor to a winning team.

#3 PF, #18 Overall, *****; no promises.  Lawrence Bernier is a nice role player.  He's not going to be a great scorer, but he should be a good defender (though, with his low potential in shot blocking, not a great one), rebounder, passer for his position, FT shooter for his position, etc.  He'll eat up a lot of minutes and get garbage putback buckets and help the team run smoothly.  Great teams have to have players like Bernier who are not the focal point of their offense but do the little things to keep them running.  Some early minutes would help him develop, but if we want him to be a four-year player, maybe he should be more of a bench guy in the short run.
6/29/2011 11:30 PM
Kentucky again jumped in on a recruit (a PG) of which we had sole consideration in the last possible cycle, and ultimately wrested him away from us after another big battle, and in the process, also stopped us from pulling in a C with whom we had the inside track on a battle with Illinois.  Here are those players:

#6 PG, #42 Overall, ****; promised 15 minutes.  Drago probably will develop into a nice pass-first PG, though it depends on his ceiling on that passing rating.  He was important because we only have 3 guards without him.  I think that Benny Feldman is going to be the new depth SG due to losing Drago to UK.  Moore will be backing up both guard slots, in the meantime.  Hopefully this hole can be filled next year and won't damage the team's prospects too much this time around.

#7 C, #35 Overall, *****; promised 10 minutes.  Spencer Hollis would've been a good center for us, particularly after getting up his speed and defense.  It hurts somewhat more that he went to an in-conference rival.  He wasn't anywhere near as important in the short term as Drago...really we were going after him because he was the best big man other than Bernier who was around, and he'll be a pretty good offensive player to go along with his very solid defensive ceiling, and I like to have 5 big men on a team at any given time because they pick up more fouls than the other positions, on average.
