Freund is climbing up the Spartan record books for scoring, and already has a high place in 3pt% and FT%.  He really is an animal.  I'd love to have him back, of course, but he is unquestionably pro ready.

Nice to get revenge on the Wolverines, our ranked in state rival and one of the only teams to beat us this year.  Oddly enough, despite a terrible game, Barry Thomas has the game-winning shot.

An 839 rating is impressive enough - already higher than any I recall seeing.  When you take out the walk-on, you have an average rating of 871.  In contrast, and keeping mind that we have been a top 5 team all year, Michigan State's average, minus walk-ons, is 846.  LSU has another player that can take minutes (and fouls).  That is daunting.

Incidentally, the Elite 8 is comprised of Michigan and Michigan State, 5 SEC teams, and Oregon State.  That is crazy.  The level of dominance of the SEC in Smith is unreal.

Surprisingly (to me, at least), we pull out the win.  I was pretty sure the odds were against us.  They may well have been, but we get to move on to the Final Four.  In the meantime, 4 out of the 5 SEC teams were knocked out last night (one of the games was between 2 SEC teams).  What's left are Michigan and Michigan State, Oregon State (my opponent, a 33-0 juggernaut), and Alabama, a 1-seed of ludicrous talent (and 1 loss).

Oh well, I did think that we had a good chance of losing this one.  Now the big question, to be answered tomorrow, is who will leave early.  I'm guessing Freund and Sheehan, but Kincannon could go now, too.

It's hard to complain about being the only team in Smith to make the Final Four in 4 of the last 5 seasons.  Obviously I would've preferred another Championship or two, but what can you do?  Michigan lost too - the final game will be between Oregon State and Alabama.

Coach, that was a tough matchup for us. The team did the best they could and we just came up short. We still had a dream season, only 4 teams made it this far.

Incidentally, Alabama, coached by Jeff Drayer, beat Oregon State, coached by Wayne Drayer (Jeff's father), 83-80, in OT.

Our last Championship was when we had three freshman guards, so if we recruit well we may not see that much of a drop-off...but it's kind of a long shot.  I'm guessing that next year will belong to Sheehan and James Moore, with Christopher Mitchell contributing.

#11 SF, #58 Overall, ****; no promises.  Barry Thomas is exactly the promising, developmental SF who is needed to either sit for a year, or to back up the SF spot while Voelker shifts over to starting PF, depending on the remaining recruiting battles.  In evaluations he looks to have very high potential in ball handling, low post, and rebounding.  He'll be a bit slow, and his stamina will never allow him to play significantly more than 20 minutes per game, but he looks like a good enough player to likely start next year, and stay in the starting lineup throughout his remaining time before going to the NBA.
I thought too highly of Thomas when we signed him.  He is in no way an NBA player.

#1 PG, #11 Overall, *****; no promises.  Freund  will probably be starting for us right away.  His passing rating/potential leaves a bit to be desired in a PG, but that'll probably be his position anyways, though he could easily move to SG or SF.  I expect that he'll leave early, the question is whether it'll be as a sophomore or as a junior.
Roy Freund is the best scoring PG I've had anywhere, anytime.  I'm glad he stayed for his junior season.
