Coach, it happens every year - teams that are supposed to be 'locks' for the Sweet 16 get knocked out early. Thankfully, this was not our year! Congratulations and best of luck in the Sweet 16.

Coach, great job getting us this far. I don't care what our seed is or who you are playing, one bad game and you're out - to get to the Elite 8 is nothing short of amazing given the parity in college basketball these days. Best of luck in the Elite 8!

We easily handle New Mexico.  Now comes the really hard part, when we've got games that are close to 50-50 in likelihood of winning.

And our season is brought to an end.  This was one of the most complete teams I've fielded...and I've had 9 Final Four (or better) teams with Michigan State alone.  Still, the best team doesn't always win, and Texas was a very talented opponent.  UCLA is the best team this year, in my opinion (with us as #2) and now Texas has to take them down in order to win the Championship.

Well, the next question is if we have any early entries.  That'll be answered soon.  I expect Moore to be gone.  I'm hoping we keep Tevis, Feldman, Bernier, and Bowers.

Coach, even with that Final 4 loss, it was still a heck of a season, one that everyone on campus is proud of! I just hope you're around next season to take us even further.

#10 SF, #33 Overall, *****; no promises.  Joyce was our first choice at the SF spot, in spite of being very mediocre in perimeter rating and FT shooting.  I felt that his athleticism and rebounding would pay dividends, and he was reasonably strong across the board other than in outside scoring.  No local SFs blew me away but I thought Joyce was the best option.  Kentucky and Michigan are battling for Daniel Razo, who was my second choice.  Wisconsin took Larry Kitchen, my third option.  There was a guy from Puerto Rico I considered, and who is going to go to either Florida or Miami.  None (with the possible exception of the Puerto Rican) would have had a significant advantage in speed, and Watson did well enough for us at the spot last year with 62 speed, so I was satisfied with this rating in Joyce even though it's not fantastic.  Joyce should make the NBA after a productive college career.  I'm not quite sure what his ceiling is but I felt it was higher than the other guys (and maybe I'll remember to compare them at a later time).

Razo, who backed up Jessie Cole at UK, left early and was drafted in the second round after winning a Championship.  Kitchen scored almost 1200 points.  With that said, we never relied on Joyce to be the guy for Michigan State, and I think he was a very valuable contributor to some excellent teams.  During his four years, our seasons ended in an Elite 8, two Final Fours, and a Championship Game.  That is a damn fine resume for a role player.

#3 C, #10 Overall, *****; no promises.  A local player, we got Mitchell unopposed.  He's already decent but doesn't have much growth potential.  If he weren't within 100 miles I probably would have pursued someone else, but I thought there was a chance we could get Mitchell without having to battle Michigan (or anyone else) so we went ahead and put in the requisite effort to take him.  I'm not sure if he's an NBA player.  Probably.  Maybe we'll get him for 4 years, though.

Mitchell was a rock-solid defensive center who was efficient on offense, for four years, on teams that were defined by their defense.  You can't ask much more from a recruit than that.

#12 PF, #49 Overall, ****; no promises.  We beat oldresorter/Wisconsin for Vosburgh, though he backed off pretty much immediately so it wasn't an actual battle.  Vosburgh is solid, unspectacular, with room to grow in a lot of areas.  My thought on targeting him was that he would be a backup to begin his career and would likely stay with us for 4 years before possibly making the NBA as a senior.  There's always a chance he matures enough to leave ahead of schedule, but I'm hoping that doesn't happen.  I also like his FT shooting, which is a great thing to like in a big man.

Extremely efficient on offense, a decent FT shooter, and a four-year player, Vosburgh was a valuable contributor to the Michigan State program, even if he only started for one season.

#2 PG, #6 Overall, *****; no promises.  James Moore is obviously a great player with a high ceiling in the areas in which he's currently weak, and limited growth potential in areas in which he's already strong.  He will be a great asset to the Spartans.

James Moore grew into our unquestioned star player, and will be very difficult to replace in the short run.  Granted, Tevis can fill in, but it won't be to the same degree as this guy, who was certainly my favorite PG since Freund (and that includes my Maryland team in Crum).  It would have been nice if he'd decided to stay another year, but I knew better than to expect that...he's ready for the pros.

#11 SF, #30 Overall, *****; no promises.  Benny Feldman is a role player, but a good one.  Sort of a typical garbageman SF, starting quality player who won't be the focus of an offense but will do everything reasonably well and make the team better as a whole.  It's hard to find SFs without any weaknesses...though he could be faster, he's fast enough, though he could be better at scoring close to the basket, he's good enough, though he could have more stamina, it's good enough for about 20 minutes per game, etc.  The areas where he doesn't look so good now, he should develop into being good enough before long.  So yeah, not a star, but a worthy contributor to a winning team.

Feldman was an efficient contributor to a couple of good teams, but I don't think he's a first-round pick, and as such, he should have stayed in school and just enjoyed himself for another year.  That would've also kept us from having seven open schollies, which would have been helpful.  Whatever, only a game.

#137 SG, unranked overall, no stars, JuCo 2; no promises.  We had a big chunk of money left after beating Michigan for Tevis and poaching Villalta from Notre Dame, so I looked around for unsigned players.  Kingery was considering Sim-coahed Western Illinois, and didn't feel strongly about them, so I went ahead and took him so we'd have the body and some money for next year.  I actually find him more appealing than Villalta, at least as a scorer off of the bench.  Neither is great, but we'll see how they progress.

#7 PG, #39 Overall, *****; no promises.  Johnny Reynolds is a shooting guard, and by that, I mean that he's a shooter.  Maybe he'll grow into being an overall scorer, with that high potential in low post, but I doubt it.  He definitely won't be a complete guard, with his low potential in passing, and his rebounding is worse than I'd like it to be, but he'll play a role and be a valuable component to the Spartans.

#4 SF, #14 Overall, *****; no promises.  Joseph McNutt has to be my favorite SF recruit in Michigan State history.  He's got high potential in a lot of places that will make him a truly formidable force.  The only area of complaint, maybe, is his rebounding, and it's at least adequate.  He should become one of our stars.  I'm hoping to have him for about 3 seasons.

#12 PF, #58 Overall, ****; no promises.  If it weren't for that horrible work ethic (and probably also the low potential in rebounding), Eanes would be a great prospect.  As it stands, he's a question mark, but probably at least a 4 year player.  I really don't know how much he'll progress.  He needs early playing time in order to stand a chance to improve significantly.
