Why do you suppose fewer people watch HBO? Because they don't like boobs?

Gee I have no idea.
Well since it's such a bad analogy, it can't be because people typically need to pay extra for it. Or because it's programming is geared toward a different kind of audience than the one that is sufficiently entertained with network programming. So just curious how you explain it.
What?! You can get HBO for the low low price of only 25 cents a day!!
Indeed, my wife and I each pay about 25 cents per day (or $15 per month, total) for HBO Now.

Thinking about it some more, I think WIS needs some kind of medal for being able to find the only 1,000 people in the entire country who would like a basketball sports sim game. How'd they do it?!!?!

Do you think everyone currently playing games at WifS knows about HD? Do you think everyone playing games at WifS is playing HD?

Do you wonder why they aren't? Because HD isn't for everyone.
benis?

benis, why haven't you played HBD? It's like a more involved HD.

Has anyone actually said that all the people who might like it already play it? Or are you living up to your titles?

The trick is, of course, how to find/attract the people who represent your room for growth efficiently. The first step is to have a good understanding of what that growth potential actually is, in a realistic sense. The smaller the potential growth, the less efficient a typical mass marketing blast approach is going to be. It's easy for customers (i.e., not shareholders) to recommend spending x amount of dollars on a big campaign, with no regard for return. It's harder for bean counters to recommend that, and I have a feeling Fox employs some bean counters.

I hope they do a push, toward targeted audiences. An ideal place would be if they have "geek-y" type programming, breaking down X's and O's, a la NFL Matchup (I don't watch much tv, so I have no idea if Fox has anything like NFL Matchup). But I suspect the most efficient way for them to attract users *who will stick around, and be willing to pay for the product* is through referral. They can do both, of course, one does not preclude the other. But I think a lot of people assume that running ads on fox programming is free. It's quite expensive, from an opportunity cost standpoint. Displacing any paying client with your own product comes at a steep cost, especially if it's prime programming.

Let's just enjoy the train ride before it crashes. I've been here since 2003. It isn't going to get better. Let's just have fun playing the game and if people leave then they leave. Clearly there isn't enough attention to detail and worlds aren't closing anytime soon, it is what it is. Might as well get used to how things are.

mbriese actually just asked me about playing HBD. I probably would really like it. Unfortunately I already spend way too much time on HD (I think we can all agree on that) so I don't think I could really handle more sim games in my life without quitting my job or breaking up my woman.

Plus fantasy football is starting up soon so that that takes up time too.

So this is a time-consuming game where you really win nothing?

Do you think that is a selling point to the millions who are missing out?

Well, these boards are probably much more time consuming than the game itself.

I'll put that as an option too. Never post or read the message boards and I can pick up HBD. I'm sure a few of you probably like that option.

Too much logic.

Benis, I'm in agreement with pretty much everything you've said on this topic here. The cost per day analysis, made me think I was about to feed starving children somewhere. Free will always trump any price, even $.02 per day. If I let everyone convince me to buy something, because it's only $X.XX per day, I'd be broke. Intro price is way too high. I would have never even tried WIS if it weren't for FREEHD. Even the $4.95 had me hesitant, but $12.95? No thanks. Funny thing is I only looked at HD, because I was actually trying to play GD, but all the worlds were full. I only found this site, because I was looking for information to use in an argument about best college football teams ever.

Get Ryan Tannehill.

If $12.95 is a deterrent, you shouldn't be playing games.

Also most of those free games aren't all that free and are pretty mindless.

This discussion leads me to wonder why Fox acquired WIS. Why do folks think they ever did that?
https://www.whatifsports.com/news/fim.asp

Q: Why sell?

A: It was not an easy decision, but at the end of the day, we knew that our primary limitation to growth was marketing/distribution. FIM brings us all the resources of a global media company: TV (Fox, Fox Sports, DirecTV) , Radio (Fox Sports Radio), Print (100s of newspapers and magazines throughout the world), Online (FoxSports.com, Scout.com).

we knew that our primary limitation to growth was marketing/distribution

Yeah that's why TK sold but it isn't why Fox bought, it was pretty much an 'acqui-hire.' As I recall, about the first thing that happened after the acquisition was that all the programmers went and worked on some other sports gaming thing for Fox ... of course it was a dozen years ago so my memory could be fuzzy ....
